The Good Life

1 Timothy 6:17-19

 

I) Introduction

A) We are to fight "the good fight of the faith" to keep ourselves and others from the love of money that causes some to wander away from the faith. (1 Timothy 6:11-16)

B) Believers who are wealthy must learn to have the ability to handle their wealth in a godly manner.

 

II) 1 Timothy 6:17

A) Riches and pride are frequently found together which  often causes some to have an exalted opinion of themselves.

B) People set their hopes on the future, but it should not be set on riches for it does not provide true fulfillment.

C) "God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy"

                1) God provides us "a way of life" according to His will.

                2) God provides us with what we need to live "this way of life."

                3) Living "this way of life" will be a filling one!

 

III) 1 Timothy 6:18-19

A) The progressive spiritual growth of a rich believer.

                1) "They are to be good" - Good works as the fruits of salvation.

                2) "To be rich in good works" - Earning a reputation of good works.

                3) "To be generous" -  Giving as part of their good works.

                4) "Ready to share" - One who shares instinctively.

B) This matured life of doing good increases in riches and giving along with godly character.

C) Like a charitable "foundation", God is able to use the godly rich to be a source of help for those in need.

 

IV) The Example of Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16-22)

A) A life riches and morality will not guarantee a sense of fulfillment.

B) The "perfect" life is not a life free from problems, but a life that is complete, lacking nothing.

C) The truth about the folly of riches can be hard to take, especially for those who are rich.

 

V) The Example of the Roman Centurion (Luke 7:2-10)

A) An ability to handle great authority and wealth and yet remain humble, generous and compassionate.

B) To address Jesus as "Lord" is to do what He tells us. (Luke 6:46)

C) A thorough belief in the authority and power of Jesus' words.

D) A type of godly faith and character that is extremely rare and worth striving for!

E) An strong and unselfish desire to see God's blessings in the lives of others.
