The Cure for the Troubled Heart

The Cure for the Troubled Heart

John14

I.                    Let not your heart be troubled. (John 14:1)

*A troubled heart is agitated because of worry, fear, uncertainty, etc. Believing that God is not in control may cause us to try to control all aspects of our lives. We may also try to comfort ourselves through sinful means.

*The disciple’s idea and expectations of Christ were wrong. They believed that He was to be their king here on earth and became troubled by Jesus saying that He was leaving them.

*Jesus said; “let not your heart be troubled.” The Bible provides for us good reasons not to.

II.                  Jesus prepares dwelling place for us. (John 14:2-6)

*People might wonder if their Christian lives really count for something in this world. God holds a different standard of significance and success. Jesus said that in His Father’s house are many ‘mansions’ and mansions are not associated with failure and insignificance.

III.                We are to walk by faith, not by sight. (John 14:8-11)

*Even if we may want ‘proof’ to know that He’s around, He doesn’t leave us because of our ‘little faith.’ But we need to realize that signs and wonders are good and they build faith, we should not come to depend totally upon them to maintain our faith.

IV.                There is a greater work for us to do. (John 14:12-14)

*Jesus said that we will do greater works because the Holy Spirit is sent every believer. We are to do the works of God because the Spirit lives in us, and if we don’t, we are in conflict with Him. As we pray asking in Jesus’ name, we grow from self-centeredness and instead, experience a life of power and effectiveness.

V.                  We are to obey God because we love Him. (John 14:15-18)

*Obeying God because we love Him builds a heart that gives preference to His ways over ours. We will see over time that His ways are always best, which should produce an even greater love for Him!

VI.                Jesus manifests Himself to those who has and keeps His commandments. (John 14:22-24)

*We will always experience conflict from this world because it is blind to the truth. Remain in fellowship with others whom God has manifested Himself to (people in the church) in order to receive support and encouragement.

VII.              We are to be guided by the Holy Spirit. (John 14:25-27)

*We have access to God’s wisdom because we have His word, the help of the  Holy Spirit, and the help of other believers.
